Turned parts frequently asked questions

Below you can find answers to our customers’ most frequently asked questions regarding our turned parts production process.

Turned parts tolerances of 10 microns are generally achieved

Q: What is your maximum diameter capacity?
A: Our turning capabilities range from 0.5mm to a maximum diameter of 50mm.
Q: Can you produce plastic turned parts?
A: Yes, we can machine most rigid plastics, see our gallery for examples.
Q: What precision turning tolerances can you achieve?
A: Tight turned parts tolerances of 5 microns can be achieved for high precision components. For mid-range parts, tolerances of +/- 0.01mm are generally achieved.
Q: Can you advise on turned parts material selection?
A: Yes, we have extensive knowledge of all materials.
Q: Can you reverse engineer a part that I wish to produce?
A: Yes, APT offers the complete design and engineering service and we can produce drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks if required.
Q: Can we specify text on parts?
A: We can machine recessed text when the minimum stroke width is at least 0.5mm. For very small text features that may not be machinable we recommend laser etching, a post-processing service that we offer to many customers.
Q: What are the restrictions with small features?
A: The smallest parts we turn are 0.5mm in diameter, so at APT there is not a lot of small features that we cannot machine. We can produce parts with sharp conical points, angles greater than 10 degrees and walls thinner than 0.5mm but best contact us to discuss your design first.
Q: Can I see my turned parts being manufactured?
A: Yes, we encourage customers to visit by prior arrangement.
Q: How will my parts be packed?
A: We have several packing methods all designed to be effective protection against damage.
Q: Are you able to supply material certificates?
A: Yes, material certificates are supplied with every delivery.
Q: How long are your delivery lead times?
A: It is very dependant on our current workload but we always advise on order to delivery lead times when we produce quotations.
Q: Do you hold any quality accreditations?
A: Yes, we hold AS 9100 and ISO9001. These two standards are the backbone of our quality control and are fundamental to the way that APT operates.
Q: Do you offer turned parts blanket orders facility?
A: Thanks to our on-site storage space and efficient production process, yes you can call off parts over a 12 month period. As your orders are produced in larger quantities, you will also benefit from better pricing.
Q: What is your minimum setup or order charge?
A: We strive to keep setup costs as low as practical but in general we charge £350 plus materials for all orders. Additional processes like heat and surface treatment such as anodising, plating and polishing are charged extra.
Q: We require material certificates for our turned parts, can you supply us with such documents?
A: Material certificates are supplied with every delivery as standard. This forms part of APT’s dedication to quality and the AS 9100 and ISO 9001 standards we hold.
